Who else needs to get out of debt and start saving again?

A LOT of people who find themselves at the end of their financial rope wonder about how they could rebuild their finances again. Out of desperation and in an effort to avoid filing bankruptcy, they use up all their savings and deplete their retirement plans hoping to survive from month to month until “things get better.” Unfortunately for a lot of people, that day never comes. I often tell my clients that it is never too late to start fresh again and that “today” is all you have to work with. Forget the past as that is now behind you. You create your own future by doing the right things in the present.
For example, it’s a fact that a lot of homeowners have lost their home to foreclosure in the last several years because of the real estate market crash. But this doesn’t mean that these people will never become homeowners again. While it may take 2-3 years to rebuild credit and save money for a down payment, it is doable and there is no point in feeling frustrated about what happened in the past. Blaming yourself, the economy, your lender, your spouse or other people for what happened to you is counterproductive and will only keep you from moving forward with your life.
Yesterday, I was counseling a single mom who raised her two children on her own without any help from her loser ex-husband when they got divorced 12 years. She had to work two jobs to pay her mortgage, buy food, keep the lights on and send her kids to college. As difficult as it was for her, she never blamed anyone for her hardships and has instead taken responsibility for her own life through the years. On top of all of that, she has managed to go back to school and earn her master’s degree in business which will help her get a job promotion! That’s what I call a positive mindset: a mindset that refuses to accept defeat no matter what the circumstances are.
If you have suffered financially because of everything that has happened with the economy, the housing market, your employment or whatever it may have been that led to your present circumstances, it’s time to pick up yourself and dust yourself and try again. You can do it. You may have lost your home, your retirement account and your savings as a result of your hardships but this doesn’t mean that you can’t start planning again for your future.  Life is too short to get depressed. Focus on the good things in your life and you will be amazed to see how happier you will be.
