Waterproof indeed

SO it has happened again. A bombardment that occurred on tin roofs with assaults on the asphalt; it was an extended blitzkrieg of rain. Water rushed with a flurry carrying the debris of our hardwork together with chronic negligence. Houses were made into anchored boats that could go anytime. It may be a scenario worthy of waterworld fame or the end of the world itself with Filipinos getting the front-billing. But no award or box-office recognition could amount to the way we handled ourselves in the midst of this catastrophe.

For in the face of gargantuan floods and other destructive cohorts, there was an even greater entity that resided with us. Our homes, schools, offices, and livelihood may have been submerged, but our spirit as a nation was not. For we looked beyond and lifted ourselves up aided by the spirit of bayanihan. Heroes emerged from this lashing by the monsoon rains. There are stories of volunteer rescuers who worked superhuman shifts. Random strangers, meanwhile, extended their hands to fellow strangers as they ferried them to safety. Those who were safe and sound in the comforts of their homes became vigilant techie-heroes of their own as they relayed information throughout the land. Acts aided by technology helped in disseminating information. It also dissected the anatomy of a disaster further aiding the fast flow of help across various evacuation zones and relief areas. Then there is the flux of help in the form of relief goods. These goods offered meant more than its physical value in the form of food, clothing, and other necessities, but it was a gesture to those who were ravaged that they were not alone in this tragedy.

Again, we have proven that we are made of tough material. Despite the hardships, our omnipresent smiles will continue beaming sunshine that could be taken away from us momentarily. Together, we will face storms and nameless monsoons, and continuously rise again and again as Filipinos.
