Maybe it has something to do with their beliefs or their lack of positivity when it comes to life—that we have exhausted our means for existence, that it is time go—but no, we are here and we remain the writers of our destiny, our history. So we focus on the now, the now that is sprouting with urgency. The New Year further expounds the point that we have to continue on with our lives. Though the previous year presented us with a bunch of tragedies and heartaches, we can only look back and give it a nod; we walk the talk by moving on. The horror of some of these events should be preserved in some room in our collective memory as reminders that we have the will to overcome them, but we pay homage by remembering the fallen. We should not deny ourselves of happiness with the moments of joy and reverie. Resting on sweet memories could be effective motivators, but this is no time for dreamy interludes and false rests.
After another false start to the end of it all, the Filipino is left to finish a race that will never seem to end. It might be a race that will lead him to a podium finish for his identity. His fragmented culture will be presented to him on a silver platter, the shiny trophy reflecting his image in pastiche like the 7,107 islands that make up his country’s geography. Or it could be a race that will erase and release him from his colonial influences that deny him of seeing the world from his own eyes. Always, there are paradigms and shifts will be evident. Maybe it is not even a race and we are competing only with ourselves. Our race remains, together with the brigade of other beautiful cultures sharing life on this planet of ours where life ends and begins each day.
