June 12 marks the 114th celebration of our independence as a nation. There will be parades not just in the motherland, but overseas as well. Philippine flags will be unfurled and proudly displayed. Our politicians and other significant individuals will be donning our traditional garb and lead the people in programs and activities. Music will be filling the air as marching bands roam around town– nationalistic songs with mainstream influences to empower the citizenry’s spirit. This is the dynamism of being independent
The history books can provide us with a generous view through the windows of our travails as a nation. It was a proud moment for the General who would later become the first President of the Republic of the Philippines Emilio Aguinaldo together with his cohorts. As he waved the Philippine flag dancing in red and blue with the sun shining as the band played Julian Felipe’s Marcha Nacional Filipina (note that it had no lyrics). The tune will eventually evolve into Lupang Hinirang with Filipino lyrics. It must have been a sublime moment for those present as we became empowered, emancipated; we announced the end of our colonial ties which lasted for more than 300 years. Though it was not recognized by Spain and the Americans; it was enough for us to recognize our “indie” spirit among ourselves. Because freedom couldn’t wait, we had to do it even though it was not official to forces outside our country.
For those in the Philippines, Independence Day will just be another free day. There’s nothing wrong with lathering up in rest and relaxation provided by a national holiday. Time could be spent well with family and friends. But then again everyone is invited to join the festivities. Whether it’s in Cavite, Luneta, or your own backyard; the simple act of appreciating the sacrifices of our heroes for the freedom that we are experiencing right now is enough. But the battle–keeping the spirit of independence– is not yet over.
