Mango Mix: Vigan joins the New 7 Wonders Cities

Once again, Filipinos have something to be proud of. Vigan made it to the New7Wonders Cities.

New7Wonders Founder-President Bernard Weber officially announced the provisional voting results of the campaign on December 7 at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In alphabetical order, the other cities that represent the global diversity of urban society are: Beirut, Lebanon; Doha, Qatar; Durban, South Africa; Havana, Cuba; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and La Paz, Bolivia.

The campaign started in 2013 with 1,200 nominees from 220 different countries. This was followed by different eliminating phases of voting from people using the Internet, smartphone applications, international telephone voting lines, and text messaging.

Being part of the New7Wonders Cities, Vigan officially becomes a heritage site to be globally appreciated and continuously taken cared of.

The city, located at Luzon’s Ilocos Sur, is one of the few old towns that survived time and history. It is built as early as the 15th century; still, the structures generally made out of bricks, stones, lime, and terracotta, remain intact.

Vigan remarkably reflects the history of the country. It speaks of how the early Filipinos were influenced by their colonizers and their interaction with other races. The fusion of Western style and Oriental design surprisingly makes Vigan a unique city.

“We congratulate each of these cities on achieving their New7Wonders status, and we look forward to celebrating their election to the ‘canon of 7’ with their citizens in 2015,” said Bernard Weber, adding, “The New7Wonders Cities will now join the New7Wonders of Nature and the New7Wonders of the World in becoming part of Global Memory for humanity for ever.”

Make sure to list Vigan in your must-visit this 2015 and be mesmerized by one of the world’s newest charm.
