The Holy Week and Easter Sunday are very spiritual and significant times for the Christian faith.
In observance of Holy Week, President Benigno Aquino III has called on Filipinos ” to be humble and sacrifice for the greater good.”
“Let us not forget that practicing humility, concern for others and rightful acts should not only be done during the Holy Week. Reflections and prayers prepare us for a lifetime of emulating the life of Jesus Christ,” the president said in Filipino.
The passion, sacrifices and suffering for The Holy Week culminates at Easter — the most joyous and festive time in the Christian calendar which is given more weight and importance than Christmas, because it commemorates the Resurrection of the crucified Christ from the dead.
But, as a nation, the trials and tribulations that will still come our way are far from over. They cannot be contained in a 40-day time period, like the Lenten season. And unlike the Passion and Death of Christ (which is re-enacted through rituals), each problem that we face will be unique in its own way — one that we cannot resolve by merely sticking to traditional methods.
Yet, we shouldn’t lose hope. The collective dream is to find our own share of Easter as a nation — a triumphant state, where poverty is alleviated and where graft and corruption are put to a grinding halt.
If we can find it in ourselves to fulfill our lenten obligations as Catholics, then all the more should we be able to muster the strength to fulfill our responsibilities, as concerned citizens.
