Filing bankruptcy when financial stress becomes too much to handle

IF you’ve ever been in a situation in your life where you had to file bankruptcy as a last resort in order to get out of debt, you know exactly what I am talking about. After having counseled thousands of people with debt problems over the years, I have learned that unresolved debt problems can lead to devastating and sometimes irreversible consequences!
For example, did you know that financial problems account for one of the leading causes of divorce in this country?  Since one out of three marriages ends in divorce, can you just imagine how many homes have been wrecked by financial problems?
Debt problems can cause a lot of stress at home and sometimes, spouses even blame each other for their present situation. Like a ticking time bomb, emotions eventually explode. When the debts are not getting paid, bill collectors are calling and basic needs such as food, utilities and rent aren’t even getting met; trust me, every conversation between husband and wife can easily turn into a big argument.  Like pulling a rubber band, as the tension keeps building up, it eventually snaps.
A lot of people coming to me for help with their debt problems tell me that they also have difficulty focusing on just about anything- their job, business or career.  Many are stuck with jobs that they don’t even like. They want to go out there and find a job that they would at least enjoy doing but they can’t even afford to take some time off for fear of losing a paycheck. If they miss a paycheck, they will get buried deeper in debt as they can’t even pay their bills as it is now.  Can you imagine waking up every morning and going to a job that you don’t even like?  You don’t like the working environment, the people aren’t friendly and your boss is always watching you like a fish in a bowl. Besides being underpaid, maybe you feel you’re stuck in a dead end job with no room for advancement and no promise for the future.  Perhaps you’re thinking about going back to school to learn something new and change careers.  But you can’t do anything about it because you just can’t afford to look for another job.
If you are in debt, something inside of you tells you that there is something terribly wrong with this situation. Is this the way to live?  You’re looking for some peace in your life but peace just seems to elude you.  You can’t even sleep at night because you’re worried about what creditors will do next.  Maybe for the last few months, you’ve managed to juggle your credit cards by taking money from one card to pay other credit cards but now you’re all maxed out.  Your friends and family don’t even return your calls anymore because they assume you’re calling them to borrow money again.   You’re feeling sorry for yourself and feel like you’re about to go insane.
I am not saying that bankruptcy is the solution to all debt problems. In some cases, it should not even be considered.  But for your sanity’s sake, if you’ve done the best you can and the best you know how to pay your creditors but you have ran out of options, consider the new possibilities that bankruptcy relief may be able to provide you and your family.  It’s a shame that so many people suffer in debt, sometimes for years, when the law provides a solution to their debt problems.
Of course, bankruptcy is not for dishonest people who just don’t want to pay their debts.  It is for honest people who need a second chance to rebuild their finances and their life.  If you were physically sick, I am sure you would go to the doctor to get help.  If you were financially sick, why not get help to regain financial well-being? Debt problems will only get worse over time unless you do something about them now.
