Minimum Wage Jump and New Worker Protections Take Effect in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – As of July 1, 2025, the minimum wage in the City of Los Angeles increased to $17.87 per hour, while unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County now require a $17.81 per hour minimum wage.

In addition to the wage hike, new “Fair Workweek” rules have taken effect across much of Los Angeles, aimed at providing hourly workers with more stability, predictability, and protections on the job. These include:

  • Advance notice of work schedules
Employers must give workers their full schedule at least 14 days in advance, allowing employees to plan around family, school, or other jobs.
  • Predictable work hours
If employers change the schedule on short notice—such as canceling shifts or calling workers in—they must provide additional pay to compensate for the disruption.
  • Mandatory rest periods between shifts
Workers must be given at least 10 hours of rest between shifts, especially when assigned a late-night closing shift followed by an early opening shift. If not, employers must pay extra or get the worker’s consent.
  • Additional pay for last-minute changes
If hours are added, dropped, or shifted with less than 14 days’ notice, workers may receive either one extra hour of pay or half-pay for any canceled hours—depending on the situation.

These protections apply to many workers in retail, hospitality, and food service industries, particularly those employed by large businesses with 300 or more employees nationwide, including franchises.

Officials at the LA County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs said the changes aim to improve job quality, reduce income volatility, and restore fairness for low-wage workers across the region.
