Malacañang denounces fabricated reports of President’s cancer diagnosis

MANILA — Malacañang on April 5, 2026 warned against the circulation of fabricated information after a graphic falsely claiming that Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer spread widely on social media.

Palace officials described the material as a “blatant lie,” noting that the graphic improperly used the branding of GMA Integrated News, ABS-CBN News, and TV5. As of posting, none of the organizations had published or broadcast such a report.

The Presidential Communications Office said the spread of falsified health information was “irresponsible and deceptive,” adding that it risks misleading the public and undermining confidence in institutions.

Medical disclosure and clarification

The false claim emerged in the wake of a legitimate health disclosure earlier this year. In late January 2026, the Presidential Communications Office confirmed that Marcos had been diagnosed with diverticulitis, a condition involving inflammation in the digestive tract.

On January 28, 2026, the President issued a video message stating he was in stable condition and undergoing treatment, including antibiotics. By February 11, 2026, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro publicly rejected circulating cancer claims and confirmed that the President had resumed official duties.

Malacañang said that, as of early April, the President continued to carry out government functions, including meetings and policy directives.

Legal framework on disinformation

Officials reiterated that the publication of false information that may endanger public order is punishable under Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code. They added that offenses committed through digital platforms may be subject to enhanced penalties under the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

The Palace urged the public to rely on verified government channels and established news organizations when assessing claims involving public officials.

Fact check

No official record or medical disclosure supports claims that the President has cancer. Government-issued statements confirm only a prior diagnosis of diverticulitis, from which he was reported to have recovered and resumed a full schedule.
