Typhoon Ambo weakens into severe tropical storm

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration on Friday, May 15, said typhoon Ambo has weakened into a severe tropical storm as it moves northwest at 20 kilometers per hour.

Ambo now has maximum winds of 110 km/h from the previous 125 km/h as well as gustiness of up to 150 km/h from the previous 165 km/h, according to PAGASA.
Ambo has already made six landfalls — San Policarpo, Eastern Samar at 12:15 p.m.

Thursday; Dalupiri Island, Northern Samar at 10:15 p.m. Thursday; Capul Island, Northern Samar at 10:30 p.m. Thursday; Ticao Island, Masbate at 12:00 a.m. Friday; Burias Island, Masbate at 3 a.m. Friday; and San Andres, Quezon at 7:45 a.m. on Friday.
Many areas in Luzon continue to be under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Nos. 1 and 2.

Those who are experiencing Signal No. 1, which has winds of 30 to 60 km/h include Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Batanes, Zambales, Bataan, Oriental Mindoro, Burias Island, northern part of Albay, and parts of Pangasinan and Camarines Sur.

Meanwhile, areas experiencing Signal No. 2, which has winds of 61 to 120 km/h are Ilocos Norte and Sur, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, La Union, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Tarlac, Aurora, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Rizal, and Metro Manila.

Ambo, the country’s first tropical cyclone for 2020, is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday, May 18.
