MANILA — Actress Sunshine Cruz has addressed public scrutiny regarding her appearance by disclosing a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease. The announcement, made on March 16, 2026, clarifies that her recent withdrawal from several entertainment projects is a direct result of her medical condition.
The 48-year-old performer noted that the condition frequently causes “half of her face to drop,” a clinical symptom of the disorder which affects voluntary muscle control. The statement followed digital interactions where Cruz was subjected to negative commentary regarding her facial symmetry.
“I have myasthenia gravis, which is why half of my face often drops,” Cruz stated. “Attacking someone’s appearance says more about your character than it does about theirs. You never truly know the battles people are fighting.”
Myasthenia gravis is characterized by a breakdown in communication between nerves and muscles. Clinical data indicates the condition often presents first in facial muscles, leading to ptosis (drooping eyelids) or an inability to maintain facial symmetry.
The disclosure marks a significant shift for Cruz, a staple of Philippine cinema for three decades. She confirmed declining multiple acting roles in early 2026 to focus on treatment. “My priority is my health, my family, and my peace,” Cruz said, noting that production rigors are currently unmanageable.
The announcement also follows Cruz’s efforts to debunk unverified personal rumors. She characterized recent tabloid claims regarding her relationship with businessman Atong Ang as “false.” Ang remains a person of interest in ongoing legal proceedings involving the disappearance of several individuals in the Philippines, a matter Cruz has distanced herself from.
