INDIAN WELLS, California — Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala is set to compete at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open ranked a career-high World No. 31, according to the latest official singles rankings released by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

The ranking marks the highest singles position achieved by a Filipino player in WTA history and places the 20-year-old inside the Top 32 heading into one of the most significant early-season tournaments on the calendar.

Tournament now underway, main draw begins March 4

The BNP Paribas Open has officially begun in Indian Wells, California, but only the qualifying rounds are currently being played. Qualifying matches run from March 1 to March 3 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Main-draw competition begins March 4.

Because Eala is entered directly into the main draw based on ranking, March 4 is the earliest she would compete. If confirmed among the seeded players when the official draw is released, she would receive a first-round bye and open play in the second round, scheduled for March 5 or 6.

Final seedings, opponent pairings and match schedules are confirmed at the tournament draw ceremony.

Where Indian Wells is played

Indian Wells is located in Riverside County, about two hours east of Los Angeles in Southern California’s Coachella Valley. The venue sits against a desert mountain backdrop and features outdoor hard courts.

The tournament is classified as a WTA 1000 event and is held concurrently with an ATP Masters 1000 tournament under the Association of Tennis Professionals.

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden spans roughly 54 acres and includes 29 courts, highlighted by Stadium 1, which seats approximately 16,100 spectators, making it one of the largest tennis-specific stadiums in the world.

Often referred to by players as “Tennis Paradise,” the event draws more than half a million spectators over two weeks of competition.

Ranking implications

WTA 1000 events award significant ranking points, particularly for players advancing into the later rounds. Entering the tournament at No. 31 places Eala near the threshold for seeding considerations and positions her for potential movement in the rankings depending on performance.

Her career-high ranking follows a strong early-season run, including a quarterfinal finish at the Dubai Tennis Championships, also a WTA 1000 event.

As qualifying concludes and the main draw begins, Eala will look to translate her ranking momentum into results in the California desert.
