The 19-year-old performer says he learned of Lea Salonga and Robert Chien’s separation at age 14, years before the family confirmed it publicly.
LOS ANGELES — Nic Chien, the 19-year-old son of Tony Award-winning performer Lea Salonga and businessman Robert Chien, has publicly recounted learning of his parents’ separation through a social media comment, describing the experience as unexpected and emotionally distressing.
Speaking during a March 20, 2026 appearance on the television program Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Chien said he was 14 years old when an Instagram user posted a message expressing sympathy over his parents’ separation—information he had not yet been told privately.
“I had no idea that they had split,” Chien said, adding that it was “a terrible way to find out.”
A private matter surfaced publicly
According to Chien’s account, he contacted his father shortly after seeing the comment to verify whether the information was accurate. He said Robert Chien confirmed that he and Salonga had separated and apologized for the way his son learned about it.
Lea Salonga and Robert Chien, who were married in 2004, publicly confirmed their separation in January 2026, stating that they had been “separated for some time.” In her remarks, Salonga did not provide a timeline or details, instead emphasizing a continued commitment to co-parenting.
Neither parent has publicly commented on Nic Chien’s account of how he learned of the separation.
Context in hindsight
In the same interview, Chien reflected that, in retrospect, there were signs of distance in his parents’ relationship. He noted that visible expressions of affection were less common in his household compared to those of his peers.
“I thought it was all normal because that’s all I knew,” he said, adding that exposure to other families later gave him a different frame of reference.
He described the separation as something that appeared to have developed gradually over time.
Personal path and family support
Chien, a performer and visual artist pursuing musical theater, also discussed his personal journey as a transgender man. He said he began hormone replacement therapy in January 2025 and later underwent gender-affirming surgery.
He credited both of his parents with supporting his transition. Salonga has previously expressed public support for her child, emphasizing respect for identity and well-being in her statements.
Public remarks from the family indicate that their relationship remains cooperative. Salonga has described their co-parenting dynamic as stable and supportive, without disclosing further personal details.
The digital dimension of private lives
Chien’s experience reflects a broader reality for families connected to public figures, where personal developments can surface online before formal confirmation. In this case, a private family matter appeared in a public digital space and reached a direct family member without prior context.
The family has maintained a largely private stance beyond their confirmed statements. Their approach underscores an effort to balance public visibility with personal boundaries, even as the speed and reach of social media continue to reshape how private information is encountered.
