MANILA — Actor-director Eric Quizon has confirmed that he is in early discussions to develop a biographical film on his father, Dolphy, with a narrative centered on the final weeks of the late entertainer’s life.

Quizon disclosed in recent interviews that conversations are underway with writer-actress Bibeth Orteza, who authored Dolphy’s autobiography. The project remains in its conceptual stage, with no formal production commitments announced as of April 2026.

A contained narrative rather than a full life story

According to Quizon, the proposed film departs from the traditional cradle-to-career biographical format. Instead, it would focus on the period beginning with Dolphy’s hospitalization and culminating in his death in July 2012.

He indicated that the intent is to document a largely private chapter in the life of a public figure, capturing both the family’s experience and the broader public response during that time. During Dolphy’s illness, calls for prayers circulated widely, reflecting the scale of his influence across the Philippines.

The approach positions the film as a time-bound, character-driven account, rather than a comprehensive retelling of a decades-long career.

Balancing public legacy and private experience

Dolphy, widely regarded as the Philippines’ “King of Comedy,” maintained a career spanning more than six decades across film, television, and stage. His body of work helped define mainstream Filipino humor and established him as one of the country’s most recognizable cultural figures.

His death in 2012 prompted widespread public mourning, with tributes from government officials, industry peers, and audiences. Quizon, who served as one of the family’s spokespersons during that period, said the proposed film would aim to present both the public dimension of that moment and the private realities experienced within the family.Development remains in early stages

As of this writing, no casting, director attachment beyond Quizon’s involvement, or production timeline has been confirmed. The project remains under development, with its scope and creative direction subject to further refinement.

Industry observers note that biographical films involving widely recognized figures typically require coordination with family stakeholders and careful handling of historical detail, particularly when depicting end-of-life events.

A focused approach to legacy storytelling

If realized, the project would align with a narrower form of biographical storytelling that emphasizes specific moments rather than entire lifespans. In this case, the film’s focus on Dolphy’s final weeks reflects an effort to document a defining period that resonated both within the family and across a national audience.

No release window or distribution platform has been announced.
