CHICAGO 09 October 2018 — Highlighting the country’s commitment towards peace, the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago participated in the 40th Peace Day in Chicago at the Daley Plaza on 17 September 2018.
Peace Day in Chicago was started by the non-profit organization The Peace School on 07 September 1978, which aims to gather Chicago residents and visitors from all walks of life and focus their wishes, thoughts and prayers for peace in each country and in the entire planet.
In recognition of the 2018 theme of the International Day of Peace, “The Right to Peace: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70”, the program highlighted messages from Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Illinois Department of Human Rights Janice Glenn, Chicago Commission on Human Relations Chairman Mona Noriega, City Colleges of Chicago Vice Chancellor Jen Mason and Community Organizer Oneida Bueno.
Chicago has the distinction of being the only major city in the world that has been conducting peace-building activities for the past 40 years and remains an official UN Peace Messenger City.
Aside from the Peace Day ceremony, peacebuilding activities are being held in Chicago Public Schools, including a daily Peace Challenge and other public events from 07 to 27 September 2018 proclaimed as “Peace Days in Chicago” by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
