Let’s Eat LA: Celebrating Food, Culture, and Family During March National Nutrition Month

Celebrating National Nutrition Month: Metro Los Angeles and DPSS Promote Health and Community Connection

This March, Los Angeles joins the nationwide celebration of National Nutrition Month, emphasizing the vital role of informed food choices and healthy eating habits. The theme for this year, “Food Connects Us,” highlights how sharing nutritious meals fosters community bonds across diverse cultures and backgrounds.

In partnership with Metro Los Angeles, the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) is working to amplify this message, with a special focus on the CalFresh Program. Formerly known as Food Stamps, CalFresh assists low-income households in enhancing their food-buying power, helping them access nutritious foods. The benefits are provided through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used at grocery stores and participating farmers’ markets.

Throughout March, Metro’s extensive communication platforms—including buses, trains, and digital displays—will feature vibrant advertisements promoting CalFresh. These ads serve as a reminder of the importance of nutrition and the resources available to support healthy lifestyles.

Residents are encouraged to engage with the campaign by sharing their food experiences on social media using the hashtags #LetsEatLA and #ChooseCalFresh. This initiative aims to foster a dialogue about the power of food to bring people together and improve community health.

The CalFresh Program not only provides financial assistance for food but also supports nutrition education, helping participants make healthier food choices. Eligibility for the program is determined by factors such as income, household size, and residency status. For detailed information and application assistance, residents can visit the DPSS Food and Nutrition webpage.

By participating in National Nutrition Month activities and utilizing programs like CalFresh, Angelenos can strengthen community ties and promote a culture of health and well-being throughout Los Angeles County.
