DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is reportedly “not interested” in seeking the top post in the country in the 2022 elections should her father, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, decide to run for vice president, according to an official of Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP).
HNP spokesman Anthony del Rosario on Wednesday, July 14, dashed any hopes for a Duterte-Duterte tandem in next year’s elections, saying the Davao mayor “does not see” it happening.
“Nabanggit din ni Mayor Sara (Mayor Sara also mentioned) that she’s not interested and she does not see a Duterte-Duterte tandem,” he said in a press briefing.
Del Rosario’s remarks came after Sara and her father emerged as Filipinos’ top picks for president and vice president, respectively, in Pulse Asia’s latest poll released on Tuesday, July 13.
According to the spokesman, should Duterte run for vice president, Sara would support him and his choice for president.
“So nabanggit niya na kung may planong tumakbo ang tatay niya bilang bise presidente at mayroong ine-endorso si Presidente Digong as a presidential candidate at ka-tandem niya (she mentioned that if her father plans to run for vice president and will endorse as his presidential candidate), then Sara and, of course, HNP will support President Duterte as vice president and President Duterte’s choice for presidential candidate,” said Del Rosario.
“But it’s not going to be Sara Duterte,” he added.
Pulse Asia’s latest survey showed that 28% of 2,400 respondents would vote for Sara if the May 2022 presidential elections were held during the survey period from June 7 to 16, 2021.
Following Sara for presidential bets were Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso (14%), former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. (13%), Senator Grace Poe (10%), and Senator Manny Pacquiao (8%).
For vice presidential bets, the Philippines’ current president led the pack with 18% of the respondents saying they would vote for him.
Following Duterte were Domagoso (14%), Senate President Vicente Sotto III (10%), Marcos (10%), and Pacquiao (9%).
