Wesson re-elected as City Council President

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Council District (CD) 10’s Herb J. Wesson, Jr. was re-elected on Tuesday, July 2, as the LA City Council President. According to a CBS Los Angeles report, Wesson was unanimously voted into office by the 12 councilmembers present on Tuesday, himself included.

CBS also reported that the lone councilmember who was not present at the vote was Councilman Bernard parks of CD8.

Parks made an appearance at an event early that morning to promote the Fourth of July festivities at the LA Memorial Coliseum.

Wesson expressed his support for his fellow legislators, which included at least five newcomers to the council. Wesson said that when the council is put under scrutiny, he is ready to “step to the plate” and “put the target” on his back.

Aside from stepping up when the council is under fire from critics, Wesson also said that he will prioritize helping his fellow councilmembers to deliver on their responsibilities to the people.

“What’s important to me is that I help put you in a position so that you can deliver on the promises that you made to the people who elected you to this office,” Wesson was quoted as saying in a report by NBC Los Angeles.

Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a challenge to the city council, who sat together with the new members for the first time.

“Put LA back on track,” Garcetti said.

The City Council is currently on break until July 23.
