Of furs and PAWS

There have been several sightings of stray cats and dogs in Manila. What brings about overpopulation in the city? It is important that people are aware of the proper knowledge about these animals, especially on their needs and rights.
There is lack of voice for animals in the country but luckily the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has given our furry friends a bigger hope. PAWS is a volunteer-based non-government organization, committed in protecting animals and in promoting humane education. It is dedicated to the holistic well-being of the animals, therefore providing them all-out love and attention. Its facility, PAWS Philippine Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC), caters to about 400 rescued cats and dogs from different places in the metro.  Located in the heart of Katipunan in Quezon City, this animal refuge and medical center provides care for neglected animals and victims of cruelty and violence. The center is only exclusive to animals in distress. Even before PARC was established, low-cost veterinary services have already been offered. The shelter does not take in unwanted pets, and strongly encourages “responsible pet ownership” instead. Animal admission is limited since PARC only depends on donations, fund-raising events and volunteers.
Most puppies sold on the street sides are usually bred from puppy mills where facilities overlook health conditions of animals. PAWS supports adoption and is devoted to finding a home for each sheltered animal. Rescued animals are treated, spayed or neutered and trained by passionate volunteers. By adopting, pet owners give the homeless pets a chance to have a better life.
One of the most important campaigns by PAWS is promoting the importance of having pets spayed and neutered. This prevents overpopulation – the primary cause of animal cruelty in the city. People are stressed by having a too many pets in their household so they tend to release them out on the streets. Unwanted pets face the cruel world outside where they struggle to survive every day. Being a responsible owner means taking all considerations in bringing home a pet. It is a commitment to the animal and its life. Domesticated pets are entirely dependent on humans.
Discrimination doesn’t only happen to people; sadly it happens to animals too. Most dogs taken out for a walk in the parks are usually pure-bred dogs (Retrievers, Siberian Huskies, etc.), while aspins (asong pinoy or native dogs) are seldom seen given the same attention. The “See Beauty Beyond Breed” campaign supports the aspins and native cats. This campaign encourages people to appreciate their own no matter what color or breed and aims to provide a bigger and better picture for animals that deserve to have a second chance at life.
It is widely known that cockfighting is one of the popular forms recreation and entertainment in the country, as well as greyhound racing and dog fighting, where animals are treated as commodities. The animals’ needs are neglected thus resulting to poor health conditions. Last April 2012, about 300 pit bulls were rescued from an illegal dogfight facility in Laguna operated by Korean syndicates. Dogs were in extreme bad condition. With the help of PAWS and other animal rescue groups, these poor animals were rescued; immediate health care and therapy were provided. Others were put down but some were able to survive and find a happy home. PAWS have gone to great lengths in standing up against animal cruelty.
Just like humans, animals have rights too. Together with passionate advocates and volunteers, PAWS is consistent in providing necessary action, service, and proper animal education. Annual events like World Animal Day and fundraising activities create harmony among Filipinos and give voice to all animals. Our unity in achieving a better life for these wonderful creatures is a testament of our moral progress and active participation in building our nation.
