Most puppies sold on the street sides are usually bred from puppy mills where facilities overlook health conditions of animals. PAWS supports adoption and is devoted to finding a home for each sheltered animal. Rescued animals are treated, spayed or neutered and trained by passionate volunteers. By adopting, pet owners give the homeless pets a chance to have a better life.
One of the most important campaigns by PAWS is promoting the importance of having pets spayed and neutered. This prevents overpopulation – the primary cause of animal cruelty in the city. It is widely known that cockfighting is one of the popular forms recreation and entertainment in the country, as well as greyhound racing and dog fighting, where animals are treated as commodities. The animals’ needs are neglected thus resulting to poor health conditions. Last April 2012, about 300 pit bulls were rescued from an illegal dogfight facility in Laguna operated by Korean syndicates. Dogs were in extreme bad condition. With the help of PAWS and other animal rescue groups, these poor animals were rescued; immediate health care and therapy were provided. Others were put down but some were able to survive and find a happy home. PAWS have gone to great lengths in standing up against animal cruelty.
Just like humans, animals have rights too. Together with passionate advocates and volunteers, PAWS is consistent in providing necessary action, service, and proper animal education. Annual events like World Animal Day and fundraising activities create harmony among Filipinos and give voice to all animals.
