ALTHOUGH American football is not really a popular sport in the Philippines, Filipinos who have lived in the United States have slowly learned to appreciate it.  In fact, just last October 19, the first ever Filipino Heritage game was played by the Oakland Raiders.
It was another milestone indeed for the Filipino-American community, as the day itself reaffirmed our existence and significance in the mainstream.  We were able to share to Americans and other ethnic groups our culture through the cultural performances given by our Filipino dance groups.  We were able to show how we, as a community, unite as one.
We believe that there’ll be more Filipino Heritage days, nights or games in the mainstream.  First of all, we are a big community that continues to contribute in making this nation a great one.    Most of us may still have to learn how to understand American football, but having a whole day to recognize the Filipino community is a total touchdown.
