Three-time Box Office King John Lloyd Cruz heads list of June birthday celebrants

JOHN Lloyd Cruz, one of the most successful movie actors in the Philippines today, will celebrate his 30th birthday on Friday, June 24, which is also the Feast of St. John the Baptist.  John Lloyd is a three-time Box Office King in the years 2008, 2009 and 2012.

April 27 marked the 95th birthday of retired Sgt. First Class Carlos Ramirez.  Mr. Ramirez was honored and presented with Certificates of Recognition, issued and authorized by the Board of Supervisors, City and County of San Francisco.

Ramirez’s grandson Navy Lt. Dr. Manuel Gonzalez, presented and red from the Certificate, “In recognition of your courage and service, and continued perseverance in the long battle for full equity for Filipino WW II veterans.”

Also sending her best wishes for a joyous celebration was Rep. Nancy Pelosi  who wrote, “Filipino soldiers who fought in the Philippines during World War II showed great heroism, patriotism and tremendous sacrifice fighting for our freedom and democracy.  You work on behalf of the Filipino World War II veterans is a shining testament to our human desire for truth and justice.

Herminie Cabalbag from the Veterans Supportive Services Center of Silicon Valley also present Ramirez a framed picture of the WWII monument in Washington DC, honoring him for all his contributions.

Having migrated to the US in 1949, Ramirez has the distinction of being in the 1 percent population of WW II  survivors who are still alive.  He has earned the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in actor, along with an Army Commendation Medal.  He also received the Prisoner of War (POW) Medal for surviving the Bataan Death March.

A celebration was held at the Burlingame Recreation Center and was attended by family and friends.
