Humility in showbusiness

Being humble, or being “mapakumbaba” is a virtue that every person should have—but very difficult to do.  We all have our egotistical side, that putting down the shield of our success, power or wealth takes some time.

In show business, there are a lot of personalities who have tried their best to keep their feet firmly planted on the ground.  In spite of the fans, box-office hits or high show ratings, they have realized that in this industry, there are no permanent enemies—just friends who fight and make up.

This past week a number of personalities have shown us how and what it takes to put all differences aside.  Actress Nadia Montenegro and talent manager Annabelle Rama finally buried the hatchet after almost two years of fiery exchanges and lawsuits.

It can be remembered that Nadia filed 26 cases against Annabelle, due to the latter’s mishandling of her children, Ynna and Annika Asistio, as talents.  Harsh words, accusations and interviews were made on both sides that the situation was almost blown out of proportion.

Then last June 5, the two decided to let their guard down and ended their two-year rift when they saw each other in Cebu during the hearing of Annabelle’s libel case against Nadia.  Upon seeing the talent manager, Nadia urged her daughters to smile and kiss their “Tita Annabelle.”  When the gesture was reciprocated, Nadia realized it was the right time.

At present, Nadia has formally withdraw the two cases against Annabelle by submitting an affidavit of desistance (for grave coercion and grave oral defamation) which she filed in San Juan.

A lot of people are happy now for the two, especially both are going through their own battles—with Nadia’s partner Boy Asistio being ill and Annabelle’s loss for in the recent election.

Another showbiz personality who recently had to eat his humble pie is comedian Vice Ganda.  During his concert, I-Vice Ganda Mo Ko sa Araneta last May 17, Vice made a crude “rape joke” about GMA 7 broadcaster Jessica Soho.  He not only made reference to rape, but also poked fun of the broadcaster’s weight.

Jessica gave an official statement, saying, “Rape is not a joke and should never be material for a comedy concert.”

After talking to the big bosses at ABS-CBN 2, Vice Ganda took the step to apologize to Jessica.  First he called her, but that time the broadcaster was not in the mood to talk.  Vice then took the extra effort to apologize publicly via his noontime show, It’s Showtime.  The amiable broadcaster in turn has accepted the comedian’s apology.

We are hoping that other personalities who are a little “off the ground” would be able to get some wisdom from Vice Ganda, Annabelle and Nadia.  A little humility in life does not hurt, and would do wonders to one’s soul.
