MANILA — Filipino-American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has indicated a shift in the thematic direction of her forthcoming third studio album, pointing to a broader emotional range that includes more optimistic and reflective material.

In an appearance on Vogue’s “Now Serving” series released on March 19, 2026, Rodrigo discussed her evolving creative approach while preparing Filipino dishes, including chicken lumpia and a calamansi-infused Paloma cocktail. The segment offered insight into both her artistic process and personal influences.

A broader emotional direction

Rodrigo, 23, said her earlier albums—Sour (2021) and Guts (2023)—were shaped largely by themes of adolescence, heartbreak, and emotional intensity.
“I really wanted to figure out a way to kind of write about joy in this album,” Rodrigo said in the feature.

She attributed this shift to changes in her personal outlook, adding that she has been “experiencing a lot of joy” and is seeking to reflect that in her songwriting. In a separate interview with British Vogue, Rodrigo said the project will remain varied in tone, including slower and emotionally driven tracks, while exploring new musical textures.

Cultural identity through food

The Vogue segment also highlighted Rodrigo’s connection to her Filipino heritage through food and family traditions.

Rodrigo shared that her introduction to lumpia came from her grandmother, who prepared a triangular version of the dish for family gatherings, including Thanksgiving. She opted for a chicken filling in the segment and used a food processor to prepare ingredients such as onions, carrots, and seasonings.

She also incorporated calamansi, a citrus fruit commonly used in Filipino cuisine, into a Paloma cocktail—an approach that reflected a blend of Filipino and Western influences.

Engagement with the Philippines

Rodrigo previously held her first major concert in the Philippines in October 2024 at the Philippine Arena, an event noted for its uniform ticket pricing model, with seats offered at ₱1,500.

Proceeds from the concert were directed to Jhpiego Philippines, which supports health programs for women and underserved communities. During her visit, Rodrigo also met with representatives of the organization.

Awaiting official announcement

Rodrigo has not announced a title or release date for the new album. Promotional activity observed in Los Angeles, including changing mural displays, has drawn attention among fans, though no official connection has been confirmed.
