MANILA — Filipino singer Matty Juniosa will compete in the live semifinals of Britain’s Got Talent after earning a Golden Buzzer during the audition round.

Juniosa secured the spot with a rendition of Purple Rain, prompting judge Simon Cowell to advance him directly to the next stage. The semifinals are scheduled to begin April 25.

A shift in performance approach

Ahead of the live shows, Juniosa said his upcoming piece will depart from the style audiences have seen so far.

“We’re going quite masculine… this is quite out of range for me,” he said, describing the performance as a deliberate shift meant to expand his artistic range.

The move aligns with a common strategy among contestants seeking to demonstrate versatility before audience voting begins.

Training and career direction

Based in Glasgow, Juniosa balanced part-time work with studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he trained in musical theater.

He said he intends to pursue both theater and mainstream music, describing the balance as central to his long-term direction.

“I can’t let go of what I learned… but I also can’t just be musical theater and let go of my past,” he said.

Growing visibility

Juniosa’s profile has also drawn attention online, including engagement from Sophia Laforteza of Katseye and Filipino-American singer Jessica Sanchez.

As the semifinals approach, Juniosa said he is focused on preparing for the live stage while managing increased attention, marking a transition from student performer to international contender.
