Drowning in debt but too afraid to ask for help?

HAVE you ever faced a situation in your life where you needed help so badly but you were just too afraid to ask for it?  Perhaps you felt confused and overwhelmed with the problem that you spent sleepless nights trying to figure out what to do.  Or maybe you were afraid of being judged, I don’t know.
As a bankruptcy attorney, over the years I have met a lot of people who were simply too fearful or even embarrassed to seek help with their debt problems.  Of course, this is perfectly understandable.  After all, financial matters are often too personal that we don’t even share this kind of information with our family or closest friends.  The result is often isolation and loneliness.  If people only knew what you were going through, maybe they could have extended a helping hand or at least offer to help you get professional help.  But unless you open up, people don’t have the foggiest idea about what you’re going through.  So what do you do?
A lot of people tell me that on the outside, everything looks good as if they were doing fine, financially speaking.  At least that’s what everyone thinks.  They have good jobs, live in nice homes, they drive fancy cars and they own expensive things.  These people look financially successful in the eyes of the world.  But unbeknownst to everyone, these people are harboring a deep secret: Nobody knows that everything that they have was purchased on credit and they could hardly afford to make the payments each month!!!  These people are in debt to their eyeballs and no one has the slightest idea about what they are going through.
I am sorry if this offends some people reading this but this is the REALITY that I see everyday. At the end of a long day, these people can’t even get a good night’s sleep because they are worried sick about how their next paycheck will cover all their bills. They get this sick feeling in their stomach just thinking about the pile of bills on their kitchen table that they haven’t been able to pay. The world thinks that they are financially successful- so how can they let anyone down?  They need to keep up with the image that the world has of them and they don’t want to disappoint anyone.  So day after day, they continue to live with this “secret” that nobody knows.  Deep inside, it’s driving them crazy. What do you think these people do in order to keep up with what they have? That’s right. They continue to borrow, which gets them in an even bigger financial hole month after month. Is this insane or what?
If your finances are out of control, you need to do something about this situation- the sooner the better. A word of advice (and you can take it with a grain of salt, it’s up to you):  Don’t let yourself drown in debt and ruin your future. If you need to get a fresh financial start by eliminating debts or at least consolidating your bills, remember that we also have bankruptcy laws that can help you get out of the financial mess that you may be in.  Debt problems can happen to anyone and there is no need to be embarrassed in asking for help. What’s worse is recognizing that there is a problem and doing nothing about it.
Don’t be discouraged.  It’s not the end of the world.  If you have made mistakes in the past, well, who hasn’t?  You don’t need to face debt problems alone.  Help is available but you need to take action.
