Glendale proclaims June 12 as Philippine Independence Day

GLENDALE, Calif. — The City of Glendale has proclaimed June 12, 2026, as Philippine Independence Day, joining Filipino communities around the world in marking the 128th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence.

The proclamation was presented during the Glendale City Council’s regular meeting on Tuesday, June 9, by Mayor Ardy Kassakhian and members of the City Council. This year’s commemoration carries the theme “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan,” or “Freedom, Future, History.”

The city’s proclamation honors the declaration of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898, in Kawit, Cavite, and recognizes the courage, sacrifice and national aspirations that shaped the Filipino nation. It also acknowledges Glendale’s sister-city relationship with Santa Rosa, Laguna, and the continuing contributions of Filipino Americans to the civic, cultural and economic life of the city.

Deputy Consul General Maria Alnee Gamble of the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles attended the presentation and accepted the proclamation alongside representatives of Filipino American community organizations.

In her remarks, Gamble recalled the historic moment on June 12, 1898, when Filipinos, under the leadership of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, proclaimed the independence and sovereignty of the Philippines. She also recognized the contributions of Filipinos in business, health care, public safety, caregiving, architecture, civic service and other professions that help strengthen local communities.

Representatives from the Filipino American Business Association of Glendale and Greater Los Angeles Area Chamber, the United Architects of the Philippines Southern California Chapter, HiFi Rotary Club, TLC Family Caregiver Group and MoTHER Movement were among those present for the ceremony.

Edith M. Fuentes, president of FABAG-GLAC, thanked city officials for recognizing the Filipino American community’s presence and contributions.

“Thank you for this proclamation and for recognizing our presence, leadership and many contributions in our community,” Fuentes said. “Filipinos are friendly, resilient, hardworking and courageous people.”

Community leaders expressed appreciation for Glendale’s recognition of Philippine Independence Day and for the city’s friendship with the Filipino American community. They also cited the importance of continuing cultural exchange, civic participation and stronger ties between Glendale and Filipino communities locally and abroad.

The observance of Philippine Independence Day is one of the most significant annual commemorations for Filipinos worldwide. In Glendale, the proclamation served as both a tribute to Philippine history and a recognition of the role Filipino Americans continue to play in shaping the city’s diverse community life.

“Mabuhay and maraming salamat,” community representatives said, offering the traditional Filipino expression of pride, gratitude and goodwill.
