Las Vegas warns of payment fraud targeting planning and zoning applicants

City officials urge developers and residents to verify all payment requests after reports of impersonation schemes tied to permitting and entitlement filings

LAS VEGAS — The City of Las Vegas is warning developers, property owners, and residents to remain vigilant against fraudulent attempts by individuals posing as government representatives to collect payments tied to planning and zoning applications.

City officials said scammers may target applicants involved in permits, entitlements, or other filings by sending emails or making contact that appears legitimate but is designed to redirect payments outside official channels. The advisory underscores a core principle: payment requests from the city are handled only through verified systems and procedures.

How the fraud works

According to the city, fraudulent actors may impersonate municipal staff or agencies and request payment through unofficial methods, including direct email replies or wire transfers. These messages can mimic formatting, tone, and departmental references, increasing the risk of deception.

Applicants are advised to treat any unsolicited or irregular payment request with caution, particularly if it deviates from standard city processes.

What official communication looks like

The City of Las Vegas outlined several safeguards for identifying legitimate correspondence. Payment requests are issued through the applicant’s official online portal, not through random emails or wire instructions; applicants will not receive correspondence from the Las Vegas Planning Commission requesting payment; the city will not ask recipients to reply directly to an email; and official letterhead does not include oversized background seals or altered formatting.

If any communication appears irregular, applicants are advised to verify directly with the city before taking action.

Where to report or verify

Residents and applicants who receive suspicious communications are encouraged to contact the city’s planning department directly at planning@lasvegasnevada.gov or (702) 229-6301.

Officials emphasize that verification through known, official channels remains the most effective safeguard.
