VATICAN CITY— The 2025 papal conclave began on Wednesday, May 7, with a historic 133 cardinal-electors entering the Sistine Chapel to choose the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church—making it the largest conclave in modern Church history.

Following the traditional Latin declaration “extra omnes” (“everyone out”), the chapel doors were sealed, and the cardinal-electors commenced their sacred task under Michelangelo’s frescoes. However, by the end of the day, black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling that no candidate had received the required two-thirds majority vote.

The unusually high number of participants reflects the expanded College of Cardinals under Pope Francis, who appointed 108 of the 133 electors. Notable figures in consideration include Cardinal Matteo Zuppi of Italy, Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana, and Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle—a significant contender for Catholics in Asia and around the world.

The conclave will continue on Thursday, May 8, with up to four ballots scheduled daily. A successful vote will be announced by the appearance of white smoke.

As the world watches and prays, Catholics await the election of a new pope to lead the Church through its next chapter.
