App Annie survey reveals different preferences for communication apps

It appears that the most heavily used apps on smartphones these days are those that allow users to socially engage with one another, according to findings released by analytics company App Annie.

In a new survey on Q1 mobile app use, App Annie found that Android smartphone users across five countries – the United States, England, Germany, South Korea and Japan – consume most of their app time communicating with friends.

The report indicated that users in the United States preferred Facebook and Instagram, Britons and Germans used WhatsApp, and South Koreans and Japanese preferred KakaoTalk and Line.

While App Annie focused on Android users, it indicated similar findings for those using iOS.

Another popularly used app is the Google Chrome browser, which ranks the second by sessions in Japan and the United States, and third in Germany and the United Kingdom.

In the same report, App Annie included data about time spent on mobile gaming. Users in the United States consumed less time gaming compared to social apps, while Japanese smartphone users clocked in four times as many gaming sessions as Americans.

App Annie’s gaming data was obtained through its purchase last week of its competitor Mobidia.

Among other survey findings include a 70 percent jump in 2014 revenue from app stores and in-app advertisements in compared to 2013 figures.

Last month, a Pew Research Center report found an increase to 64 percent of Americans who currently own smartphones, up from 35 percent in 2011.
