ARTESIA – Lakewood police investigators are urging the public for leads in the hit-and-run death of an 83-year-old Filipino woman who was walking to church on the morning of May 25.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a red car struck and killed Carolina Garnado Estrella around 4:40am Saturday morning  (May 25) as she was crossing Norwalk Boulevard and Droxford Street in Artesia.

She was walking towards New Life Community Church to drop off canned goods when the hit and run occurred, according to family members who spoke to other media.

Lakewood Police Investigator Chris Bronowicki told the Asian Journal he’s canvassed the area around the church, searching for clues and local stores surveillance video tapes.

“This may turn out to be one of those sad and tragic cases,” Bronowicki told the Asian Journal. “We have nothing to report.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in a statement said the driver failed to remain at the scene of the collision and fled south bound on Norwalk Boulevard and out of view.

The vehicle is described as red in color with substantial damage to the front end and windshield, authorities said in a statement.

Bronowicki said he’ll start calling local body shops to see if they serviced a vehicle matching the description

In the meantime, Bronowicki encourages anyone with any additional information or who may have witnessed the traffic collision to contact him at (562) 623-3500.
