Porto’s Bakery raises money for PH typhoon relief efforts

GLENDALE—Porto’s Bakery contributed $10,000 to American Red Cross for typhoon aid efforts in the Philippines on Friday, December 6, in Glendale, CA.

All bakery branch locations (Glendale, Burbank and Downey) held the three-day typhoon fundraising drive from December 2 to 4.

20 percent of sales of regular-sized cheese rolls were donated to American Red Cross.

“This is a huge effort campaign for Philippine typhoon relief, selling 68,000 cheese rolls,” Beatriz Porto, Porto’s Bakery vice president of community relations, said.

The bakery also organized and helped in fundraising efforts for the Haiti earthquake and Japan tsunami in 2010 and 2011, respectively, Porto added.

American Red Cross is only accepting cash and check donations for the Philippine typhoon relief.

“We are communicating with the Philippine Red Cross to help recover Filipinos from the disaster (sic),” Ron Farina, American Red Cross executive director, said.

The Philippine typhoon has brought awareness to the community through television and radio advertisements, Glendale City Mayor Dave Weaver added.

Porto’s Bakery sent a message to the typhoon victims.

“My heart goes out to them. Don’t lose hope. Help is coming,” Porto said.
