WEAVERVILLE — History will come alive when a traditional Chinese lion dance will be presented at the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park (SHP) to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. This free special event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, will take place in front of the “Temple of the Forest Beneath the Clouds,” a Taoist temple built in 1874 that is the oldest continuously used Chinese temple in California.
Chinese believe the lions will preserve peace and tranquility in the community and prevail over all evil to bring joy and happiness in the new year. There will be a traditional firecracker display after the lion dance, along with hot tea and fortune cookies provided by the Weaverville Joss House Association. Chinese New Year crafts along with tours of the temple will also be offered during the event.
