New ConGen inducts 1213-14 UBLA officers

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — LA’s new consul-general, Ambassador Ma. Hellen Barber-de la Vega, last Saturday, May 11, inducted into office the 2013-14 officers of United Bicolandia Los Angeles (UBLA) at the Radisson Hotel in this city.

Heading the line-up of the newly inducted officers were Board Chairman Zenaida “Zeny” P. Sabocor and President Antonia “Nanie” K.R. Enriquez.

ConGen Barber-de la Vega, before coming here recently as full-fledged consul-general, was the ambassador to the country of Myanmar (Burma). Previous to that, she had a 4-year stint in LA as deputy (or assistant) consul- general.

Los Angeles is a much coveted consular posting, vied for even by ambassadors in smaller countries, it being one of the biggest Philippine foreign consulates in the world, with a big staff and jurisdiction over Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. At present the deputy congen is a Bicolano from Naga City, Daniel Espiritu.

The newly inducted UBLA officers were:

Board of Directors: Zenaida P. Sabocor, chairman; Antonio G. Martires, vice chairman; Norman Avengoza, Aida F. Brizuela, Antonia K.R. Enriquez, Emma Z. Sabido and Albert Serrano, directors; and Cecile E. Rosana, board secretary.

Executive Officers: Antonia K.R. Enriquez, president; Marie Rose Cabrera, 1st vice president; Manuel Rubio Jr., 2nd vice president; Joelan Brillo, executive secretary; Rosalina C. Gardoce, asst. secretary; Sheila Melanie N. Berrei, treasurer; Teresita Orcine, asst. treasurer; Aida V. Asuncion, auditor; Rufo Fabricante, business manager; Hermito S.D. San Jose Jr., PRO; Luisita Martires and Vernon N. Nieva, sgts.-at-arms.

Standing Committees Chairmen: Serafin B. Sabocor, civic, charitable and humanitarian; Marilyn A. Avengoza, membership; Teresa J. Serrano, cultural and social; Emma Z. Sabido, Penafrancia holdings and records custodian; Lemuel Amit, religious; Rodolfo Ferran; ways and means; and Angel Martires, information technology.
