Las Vegas, NV – The following is a joint statement from One APIA Nevada Vice Chair Sanje Sedera and South Asia Young Professionals Alliance Founder Reuben D’Silva regarding the vacancies and candidates in Nevada’s 10th Assembly District:
In Nevada, Asian Pacific Islander Americans played a decisive and vital role in the sweeping victories Democrats saw up and down the ballot both in November 2016 and 2018. We self-organized, fundraised, registered voters, phonebanked in various languages, and knocked on countless doors. What we want and need now is a voice in the government, especially in our state government. Presently, there are zero APIA representatives serving in the state legislature. That can all change next Tuesday, November 18.
In Assembly District 10, we have two incredibly qualified APIA Candidates: Rochelle Nguyen and Nadia Hojjat. We have the opportunity to make history and to improve our state with either of their appointments.
Ms. Nguyen has demonstrated both a vested personal and professional commitment to bettering our immigration, legal, and health care systems and proven that, out of personal hardship, can come power. As the daughter of a refugee, she learned responsibility, dedication, and an infallible work ethic. A work ethic she has employed as a defense attorney, serving our community.
Ms. Hojjat dedicated her life to the service and betterment of Nevadan, Democrats, and the APIA community. As a Chief Deputy Public Defender, she is well-versed in the Silver State’s laws and our strengths and weaknesses. She knows that a strong state serves all constituents – and is willing to fight for that vision: a Nevada with an economy, education system, and criminal justice system that works for all.
We have two qualified, remarkable candidates. Both of whom would make history and propel our state forward. We urge the State Assembly Caucus to endorse either Ms. Rochelle Nguyen or Ms. Nadia Hojjat to Assembly District 10.
