LOS ANGELES – A local Filipino-American public servant was recently appointed by Californa Gov. Jerry Brown to the Califor- nia Volunteers Board of Commissioners.
Cerritos Mayor Pro Tem Mark Pulido’s appointment to the board of commissioners was announced on Friday, December 20.
Pulido, 44, has a significantly extensive experience in public service. He was a former district director for Congressman Alan Lowenthal, and a consultant at the California State Assembly Speaker’s Office of Member Ser- vices.
“As a native Californian, thank you Governor Brown for this wonderful opportunity for me to serve and give back for all of my blessings,” Pulido said.
“I am humbled and deeply honored,” he added.
A Democrat, Pulido was formerly a deputy at the Democratic National Convention Committee Community Relations Department. He was also an administrative analyst and management assistant at the Long Beach City Manager’s Office. Pulido also previously served as member and president of the ABC Unified School District Board of Education. According to www.californiavolunteers.org, the official web- site of California Volunteers, the 25 members of Board of Commissioners are appointed by the state Governor. The role of the board is to carry out the mission and objectives of California Volunteers and fulfill the statutory responsibilities for State Commissions under the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993.
Commission members serve no more than two three-year terms and do not receive a salary. They function as “Ambassadors of Service” in their local communities to promote service opportunities, and to encourage service by all Californians.
Pulido said that commissioners also participate in the following activities on behalf of California Volunteers:
-Approve grantmaking policies, procedures, and funding proposals submitted to the Corporation for National and Community Service;
-Advise and participate in the work of California Volunteers including policy, communication and program decision making, and special initiatives by attend- ing meetings and participating on committees, working groups, and task forces;
-Reach out to specific constituencies such as government, nonprofits, business, labor, and communities of faith to seek their participation in and support of California Volunteers activities and programs;
-Coordinate with other state agencies and volunteer service programs to ensure a compre- hensive and integrate service system within the state;
-Promote community service throughout the state by representing California Volunteers at service related events and venues;
-Support California Volunteers-funded programs by participating in site visits and speaking at launch or graduation activities; and,
-Participate in the development of the annual state service plan often called the Unified State Plan.
According to Pulido, he applied through an online application process on Governor Brown’s website. Pulido hopes that his service helps inspire other Filipino-Americans to seek appointments from Gov. Brown.
“I am excited to serve as an Ambassador of Service in local communities to promote service opportunities and to encourage service by all Californians,” Pulido said.
