Filipino sentenced in Camp Pendleton bribery case

LOS ANGELES — A Filipino from San Diego, Calif. was sentenced to go to jail in connection to what is being called the “Godfather of Camp Pendleton” bribery case.

According to a report by Balitang America, Bayani Yabut Abueg Jr., president of MBR Associates Inc., was sentenced to six months in prison and received around $366,000 in fines for bribing a US government official.

In January 2014, Abueg and another contractor, Hugo Alonso, pleaded guilty to bribing US Department of Defense employee Natividad Cervantes in exchange for major construction contracts for projects being done in Camp Pendleton in San Diego.

Cervantes is allegedly known as the “Godfather of Camp Pendleton,” and supposedly used his position to influence the awarding of government contracts to private companies.

Abueg’s company, MBR, was also put on a five-year probation.
