BATON ROUGE – Nerelyn Soreta, a Filipina teacher in Baton Rouge, LA charged with assaulting a wheel chair bound student, is now out on a $10,000 bail.

According to a Balitang America report, Soreta was charged with simple battery of the infirm.

If convicted, Soreta will be face six months of incarceration for the offense.

Earlier this week, Soreta surrendered to authorities after an amateur cell phone video captured her allegedly slapping a nine-year-old special needs student in the East Baton Rouge Parish School.

According to reports, school officials placed Soreta on administrative leave with pay until further notice while investigation is still ongoing.

Soreta’s defense counsel, Atty. Yigal Bander, claimed in a press statement emailed to Balitang America that Soreta is innocent.

The Fil-Am news outlet also reported that Soreta is supposedly among 300 Filipino teachers in Louisiana who were victims of a human trafficking scheme in 2010.
