Beginning May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will no longer accept standard state-issued driver’s licenses for domestic air travel unless they are REAL ID-compliant.
With the enforcement date fast approaching, here’s everything travelers need to know to avoid disruptions at the airport.
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets security standards set by the federal government under the REAL ID Act of 2005, passed in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations.
REAL IDs are marked with a star in the upper right-hand corner. In California, the symbol includes a gold bear with a white star.
Starting May 7, 2025, travelers 18 and older must present a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative (like a U.S. passport) to:
- Board domestic flights
- Enter federal facilities
- Visit military bases
Why It Matters
Without a REAL ID or an approved federal identification, you won’t be allowed through TSA security checkpoints for domestic air travel—even if you have a valid boarding pass. Signs have already gone up at U.S. airports warning travelers of the deadline.
How to Get a REAL ID in California (and Most States)
- Start Online:
Visit the DMV REAL ID application portal to begin the process.
- Gather Required Documents:
You must bring original copies of:
- Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport)
- Proof of Social Security number (e.g., SSN card, W-2, or pay stub with full SSN)
- Two proofs of California residency (e.g., utility bills, lease agreement, mortgage statement)
- Name change documents, if your current legal name differs from your identity document
- Visit a DMV Office in Person:
REAL ID applications cannot be completed online or by mail. DMV appointments are highly recommended due to rising demand.
Already Have a REAL ID?
Check the top-right corner of your license or ID card. If you see a:
- Star or symbol (like a bear with a star in CA) → Your ID is compliant
- Phrase “Federal Limits Apply” → Your ID is not REAL ID-compliant
What If You Don’t Want a REAL ID?
You can still fly domestically or enter federal buildings using one of the following alternatives:
- Valid U.S. passport or passport card
- DHS Trusted Traveler Cards (e.g., Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
- Military ID
- Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
Note: Children under 18 do not need a REAL ID if flying with an adult who has compliant identification.
Final Tips for Travelers
- Act Early: DMV offices expect high traffic leading up to the May 2025 deadline. Secure your appointment as soon as possible.
- Bring Original Documents: Photocopies or expired documents will be rejected.
- Check State-Specific Requirements: Some states offer Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs) that also meet federal travel standards.
What Happens If You Don’t Comply?
Beginning May 7, 2025, TSA agents will deny access to the security screening area if you present a non-compliant ID without an acceptable alternative. You may miss your flight—even if you’re otherwise cleared to travel.
