The Peace Parade

To live in a country where peace reigns supreme is a dream for Filipinos who believe in its blessings. Reaching a state of complete peace may sound a bit too far-fetched, but believing at least that it could be attained is worth it. As the nation observes the 9th National Peace Consciousness Month (Peace Month), the labors and gifts of kalayaan will be spread out across the archipelago. For now, having a conscious thought that it could prevail over our country is comparable to a parade that will roam around the streets and stir up the senses of the citizens.

Made possible by Proclamation No. 675, Peace Month for this year will banner “Ako. Ikaw. Tayo. Magkakaiba, Nagkakaisa sa Kapayapaan” (I. You. We. Different but United in Peace). Events are lined up to raise the awareness and consciousness of Filipinos of the government’s efforts of attaining peace with groups that have different ideologies. Also, an important point to drive home is its aim to promote a culture of peace among Filipinos. A football clinic, photo exhibits, peace and job fairs, among others are in-store for those who will participate. Much more luminous in significance is relaying the message to children, whatever race or religion they might be in, that differences should not hinder the opportunities for them to discover and foster healthy relationships with other people.

Though some of the traits of the warrior have been ingrained in our DNA through centuries of tribal exploits and colonial oppression, nurturing the warrior within to perform acts that will lead to a harmonious society is much more needed among us. Warriors that are able to channel their energies while fueled by their sense of duty to nativity and country will pave the way and spread the message to others who have sleeping warriors in them. They could also pacify the violent ones. We need to believe that peace is attainable, and that we can get through our differences, for diversity never was related, in anyway, to division.
