(Part one)

Have you ever felt burned out, really exhausted and stressoed with work or simply fed up with everyday routines?  Or have you ever felt bored and life seems to be going around in circles or you must have taken a path that went on endlessly with no goals reached?   Were you ever trapped in destructive cycles  or entangled in toxic relationships and situations?

I know everyone has, for at least once or twice in their lives, felt a certain slump or dead end.  Most of us have experienced asking ourselves, “What the heck is happening to me?” or “Why is my life so slow and unlucky?”

What then do most people do to alleviate the stress or even find meaning in a seemingly (according to their perspective) senseless world?

They take a break or take time out.  They either book a trip and take a vacation somewhere where there is sand and sea. Others take refuge in the mountains and breathe some fresh air. Some sleep or simply rest while others take the time to do chores in the house. A few exercise in the gym or go hiking. Each person have their own way of dealing with stress.

But there are some who stay in limbo, not being able to identify effective measures to cope with stress. Some bask in self pity, recalling failures in the past and associate it with the present condition they are in. Many endlessly find fault in other people or situations, refusing to look deeply and find answers within.

There are also some people who don’t know what else to do when they’ve tried taking all the breaks. What then should one do?

FIRST, simply BREATHE. Try to get in more oxygen into your body. Slow breathing will certainly calm down frayed nerves and palpitations. Nothing to rush, nothing to run after. Simply take things slow and easy. The name of the game is to relax and just breathe.

I took the opportunity of taking a break this past Lenten season. Amid the contemplation, I let go of worries even for a while and enjoyed the simple things in life. Family, good food, quiet moments and prayer.

I walked under the coconut and mango trees, sat under the cool shade and gazed at the blue skies. I stared at nowhere, without thinking much about anything in particular and listened to the birds chirping. I simply lazed off, taking the precious moments grounding with nature. Having the perks of a natural pool, I lay there cooling off the hot summer day. I sipped buko juice and thanked God for the chance to unwind.

My heart overflowed with joy and I cannot ask for more. I am grateful.

And…we are not done yet. My next column will tackle techniques in resetting your life.
