SADHC and its wide range of services are free to anyone who has Medi-Cal

Whether you are a senior citizen or a seriously injured individual, boredom can creep up on you rather early on. You’re often spending whole days at home, remaining stagnant instead of maintaining an active lifestyle. It’s easy to get into the habit of staying home for days at a time.

For Filipinos who don’t want to sacrifice their social lives for their age or health, Silverlake Adult Day Health Care (SADHC) offers a wide range of healthcare services, meals and activities that can help participants feel active.

Located in Historic Filipinotown, SADHC offers exercise to help and encourage participants to stay active. The broad range of health services offered at SADHC cover include restorative services including physical, occupational and speech therapies aided by a diverse and talented team of registered nurses (RN), licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), dieticians and other health professionals who speak both English and Tagalog.

Each participant is treated according to his/her own specific health care needs whether its diabetes or hypertension or dementia or Alzheimer’s. The cooking staff also offers daily hot meals for breakfast and lunch, including various Filipino and Korean cuisine options.

“This is the place for them to allow them to express themselves with friends and get rid of their loneliness and talk about their future plans,” said Tita Bernie Targa-Ganon, activities director at SADHC. “So there’s a lot of conversations and activities going on that makes them feel alive. It gives them a release of energy that is within them to be loved because we give love to them. This is not just a health center, but it is a second home for them.”

But SADHC isn’t just a run-of-the-mill old folk’s home. SADHC is a state-funded deterioration prevention facility meant to keep seniors from going to traditional nursing homes. But what truly differentiates SADHC from other similar centers is its staff that puts in the extra effort to connect its participants with the community and encourages them to remain active. Their No. 1 goal is to bring personal fulfillment to each participant’s life while making sure they’re getting the health care they need.

Due to its location in Historic Filipinotown, SADHC makes it a point to celebrate various Philippine holidays each month. This month, they celebrated Flores de Mayo and in June, there will be a Philippine Independence Day celebration.

“Our goal here is for them to be a part of the community and be active in it,” said Lester Hernandez, program director of SADHC. “We have participants here who are 100 years old and they’re still active! We really do our best to connect them to the community, so it’s not just to come here and do some bingo and go home. This is a second home and Tita Bernie has done a great job to be able to create something new and something for patients to look forward to. She goes beyond to provide something that would remind [participants] of family and home.”

The daycare is free to anyone who has Medi-Cal; just schedule an appointment to visit the facility and ask how to join. For those in the area, SADHC offers a convenient pick-up service that picks participants up from their homes. Call or visit today to learn more information!
