THE City of Carson, California will be closing out Filipino American History Month with its annual tribute to Larry Itliong.
On Saturday, October 28, the city will host its 13th annual Larry Itliong Day Celebration in the Dominguez Room at the Carson Event Center from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. located at 801. E. Carson Street in Carson.
This free event celebrates the legacy of Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong. His fight for the well-being of California Farm Workers transformed farmworkers’ rights and working conditions, making an indelible mark in the labor and civil rights movements of American history.
This year’s program features a parade, entertainment, labor and organization awards, and the recognition of the essay and contest winners.
The hosts for the program include Marc Anthony Nicolas, a two-time Emmy winner who is a producer for CBS TV, The Talk CBS, and produced the Kelly Clarkson Show, Tyra Banks Show, and Ellen DeGeneres Show; and Ranella Ferrer, a Fil-Am singer, host, and performer.
Entertainers include:
Jo Awayan, a singer who has earned the “Best Female Award” in the Awit Awards. Not long after, she became the “Sprite” artist where she toured with Janno Gibbs and Oggie Alcasid. Acting opportunities also knocked on her doors with sitcoms such as “Bistek” and “Palibhasa Lalake”. She also performed as a main act for Ichiban Library in San Francisco, California.
FilTrio, the fastest rising Fil-Am classical crossover trio under Starlink Music. Each individual has their own forte ranging from broadway to ballads. They recently released their first single “O Holy Night” and a New single ” A Moment Like This”.
Kayamanan ng Lahi, a family -oriented, multi-generational Philippine folk and dance arts organization based in Los Angeles, California. Through education and entertainment, they provide opportunities to learn and experience the richness and diversity of Philippine culture through dance, music, and song.
For over three decades, the Rondalla Club of Los Angeles (RCLA) has had the honor of performing at festivals, social and civic functions as well as cultural events throughout California and beyond. In doing so, RCLA continuously shapes the Filipino American rondalla music aesthetic through an applied historical perspective combined with entertainingly immersive instruction.
“The City of Carson is the first city to recognize the contributions of labor union leader Larry Itliong. We are proud to have this annual event and proud to have been instrumental in the movement to get Assembly Bill 7 passed in Sacramento recognizing October 25th as Larry Itliong Day throughout California,” said City of Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes.
