DUBBED as the “Fight of the Decade,” the highly anticipated dream match—between Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao and undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.—has been making headlines even before the fight was finalized. Luckily for their adoring fans, the deal has been set and the two fighters will indeed slug it out on May 2 in Las Vegas.
In the boxing world, a lot of important names are remembered and heroes have been born. These individuals have bravely confronted battles within the ring with courage and determination. Pacquiao and Mayweather are among these heroes who are admired for their dedication to winning, which catapulted them to be two of the most famous personalities of the sport. Their careers so far, embody the characteristics legends are made of.
Stakes are high as the two boxing legends-in-the-making are expected to enter the fight and give it their all within 12 rounds of grueling and intense fighting, unless one of them hits the canvas first. Both Pacquiao and Mayweather will engage in one of the greatest displays of boxing ever seen on any stage.
The two are heralded as the world’s best pound for pound fighter of their generation because of their impressive boxing records, Pacquiao with (57-5-2, 38 knockouts) and Mayweather with (47-0, 26 knockouts). With both fighters armed with sensational careers and massive followings, the fight is also expected to generate the most money ever made in boxing history.
As early as Feb. 23, reports said that ticket prices for the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather bout are already skyrocketing. Fighthype.com reported that the average ticket price for the fight is already $10,506.41, while the cheapest ticket is priced at $4,175 for Section 201, Row P. While there has not been a price set for the pay-per-view broadcast, ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael warns that “it’s certainly not going to be a cheap night—even if you watch it from home.”
While complete details regarding the fight are yet to be announced, Rafael wrote on ESPN.com about what to expect.
“Mayweather and Pacquiao will be meeting to unify their three alphabet belts. Mayweather will be defending his WBC and WBA titles, as well as the lineal championship, while Pacquiao will be defending his WBO belt. Unofficially, the winner of the fight will be regarded as the pound-for-pound king and cement his legacy as the No. 1 fighter of the era,” Rafael said.
There is a long list of great boxers out there, those who do their best to entertain and win while putting on a show before, during and after every fight. Pacquiao and Mayweather will embark on an undertaking that is comparable to that of well-known kings and conquerors from ancient times.
The two have already made a stamp in boxing history even before this fight. They are expected to be even bigger stars afterwards. With this legacy, who can argue with this bout being the greatest fight of the decade—and maybe all-time?
