THE federalization of the Philippines has been a much talked about debate today, that we need to skim off the opinions of people to get to the essence of it. As for any system of government, there are advantages and disadvantages. However, it would be hard to see through the real purpose of the idea if we remain dependent on principles based on what others people think.
A system where final decisions are dispersed among local governments representing specific and sometimes overlapping geographical areas, it can be susceptible to manipulation by narrow local interests and legislation. On the other hand, its strength lies in its ability to provide access to governmental decision-making by those affected. In short, it provides power to all levels of government, requires political flexibility and protects individual liberty.
But the idea of changing something, a part of our life as a nation is intimidating and unreal. However, the people may choose – federalism or not – the welfare of the nation should be the first priority. Differences in political views or ambitions should not deter the purpose of why the issue of federalization is being brought up. We are first and foremost one country regardless of whatever government system we choose.(AJPress)
