DUBAI — For much of Thursday night, the loudest cheers inside the stadium belonged to Alexandra Eala.

The 20-year-old Filipino standout exited the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in the quarterfinals after a 6-0, 6-2 loss to World No. 4 Coco Gauff, but the atmosphere reflected something larger than the scoreline: Eala’s expanding presence on the WTA Tour and her growing international following.

The WTA 1000 event, held Feb. 15–21 on outdoor hard courts with a total prize purse of $4,088,211, has long attracted elite fields. Russia’s Mirra Andreeva entered this year as defending champion after winning the 2025 title during her breakthrough campaign.

Against Gauff, Eala faced one of the sport’s most established young stars. The American dictated play early, controlling baseline exchanges and converting opportunities efficiently. Yet the crowd support for Eala remained constant throughout the match, underscoring her growing visibility among Filipino fans in the Gulf region and beyond.

Afterward, Gauff acknowledged the partisan energy with humor, saying she chose to imagine the cheers were for her. “If you can’t beat them, you’ve got to join them,” she said, describing how she maintained focus. She also credited Eala for drawing new audiences to the sport, a reflection of the Filipino player’s rising influence.

This year’s Dubai draw has been reshaped by several withdrawals and walkovers, creating shifting competitive dynamics deeper in the bracket. Gauff advances to the semifinals with an opportunity to secure her first WTA 1000 title since Wuhan last fall.

For Eala, the result adds another milestone to a season that continues to test her against top-tier opposition. Though the quarterfinal ended in straight sets, the response inside the arena suggested that her impact extends well beyond a single night’s result, a trajectory that remains closely watched by Filipino fans worldwide.
