MIAMI, FL — March 23, 2025 — In a stunning upset that shook the tennis world, 19-year-old Filipino rising star Alexandra “Alex” Eala defeated World No. 5 and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, at the Miami Open on Sunday.
The landmark win makes Eala the first Filipino player in the Open Era to defeat a top-10 ranked opponent on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. It’s also her first time reaching the Round of 16 in a WTA 1000 event — a major milestone in her professional career.
“I’m just in disbelief,” Eala said in an on-court interview with Tennis Channel after the match. “I knew I could win from the start, but the chances were low given that she’s a great player. I think my belief and the trust I had in myself is what pushed me through.”
Eala, who received a wildcard entry into the tournament, is on an impressive run. Her victory over Keys follows a second-round upset against 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, which she also won in straight sets.
Having trained at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain since she was 13, Eala has long been viewed as a future star. Her performance this week in Miami is now living proof of that promise, earning admiration from analysts and fans across the globe.
She now advances to face 10th seed Paula Badosa of Spain in the Round of 16. Badosa secured her spot with a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Clara Tauson.
Eala’s historic run is more than just a personal triumph — it’s a proud moment for Philippine sports and a powerful message to young athletes throughout Asia.
