Miami, FL – March 24, 2025 — Alexandra Eala’s remarkable run at the 2025 Miami Open continues, as the 19-year-old Filipina advanced to the quarterfinals following the withdrawal of Spanish star Paula Badosa due to a lower back injury.
Badosa, ranked No. 11 in the world, sustained the injury during her third-round win over Denmark’s Clara Tauson. Despite undergoing treatment, she ultimately withdrew ahead of her match against Eala, citing the risk of worsening the injury.
“It’s always tough to pull out of a tournament, especially one as special as Miami,” Badosa said in a statement. “I’ve been dealing with lower back pain, and after speaking with my medical team, we felt it was best to rest and avoid risking a more serious injury. I wish Alexandra all the best moving forward.”
With the walkover, Eala becomes the first Filipino player—male or female—to reach the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event, marking a historic milestone for Philippine tennis. Her campaign has already included a stunning third-round upset over reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys, where she showcased composure and confidence well beyond her years.
“This isn’t the way you want to advance, but I have a lot of respect for Paula and hope she heals quickly,” Eala said. “I’m staying focused, taking it one match at a time, and just trying to enjoy every moment out here.”
Up next for Eala is her biggest challenge yet: World No. 1 Iga Świątek. The Polish star advanced after defeating Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in a commanding fourth-round performance. Świątek, a four-time Grand Slam champion, brings elite experience and powerful baseline play to what is expected to be a thrilling quarterfinal showdown.
As she prepares to face the world’s best, Alexandra Eala continues to defy expectations and inspire fans—not only in the Philippines, but across the global tennis community. Her run in Miami is quickly becoming one of the tournament’s most compelling storylines.
