John Lloyd, Bea Alonzo to be awarded Box-Office King and Queen

HANDSOME actor John Lloyd Cruz and the beautiful Bea Alonzo were chosen Box-Office King and Queen in this year’s 44th Box-Office Entertainment Awards headed by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc. (GMMSFI).  This was announced last April 7, during the foundation’s official deliberation at Cabalen Restaurant in Restaurant.

It was actually yours truly, who launched the Box-Office King and Queen in 1970.  At that time, I also headed the Miss Republic of the Philippines, a pageant which chooses the country’s representatives to the Miss World congress in London.  After leaving the Philippines in the late 1970s, the rights to the Box-Office King and Queen awards went to the heirs of Guillermo Mendoza who since then have continued the tradition.

Bea and John Lloyd have been making successful movies since the start of their love team, including their last one The Mistress in 2012.  The critically acclaimed film garnered a gross of P 260 million at the box office, making it the third highest grossing Filipino film of all time.

Last year, the GMMSFI added a new category, the “Phenomenal Box-Office Star” which was awarded to Vice Ganda for his film, Unkabogable Paybeyt Benjamin.  The film earned P331.2 million, and held the record as the highest-grossing Filipino film.

This year, the award goes to Vice Ganda too, but will be sharing it with his co-stars Ai-Ai deals Alas and Kris Aquino for their film Sisterakas.  The film was an entry at the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2012 and now holds the record as highest grossing film with P342 million.

This year’s Film Actor of the Year is Kapuso star Dingdon Dantes, while Angelica Panganiban and Angel Locsin will be sharing the award as Film Actresses of the Year.
