Filipino American actor and former professional wrestling champion assumes the lead role after an injury to Ryan Hurst disrupted production of the live-action PlayStation adaptation
LOS ANGELES — Dave Bautista, the Filipino American actor who parlayed a championship career in professional wrestling into prominent roles in some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises, will take over as Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of God of War.
Bautista, 57, became internationally known as Batista during his years with WWE before establishing himself as a screen actor. His portrayal of Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films brought him to a global movie audience, followed by roles in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 and Dune films, Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin.
He now steps into one of video gaming’s most recognizable roles, replacing Ryan Hurst, who suffered a torn biceps muscle while filming in Vancouver and underwent surgery. Variety reported that Hurst’s recovery would have pushed the production’s return into 2027, leading Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to recast the part. Footage already filmed with Hurst as Kratos is expected to be redone.
Prime Video’s two-season adaptation draws from the Norse-era God of War games, which recast Kratos not simply as a formidable warrior but as a father struggling to raise his son, Atreus. Their journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife, Faye, becomes the emotional center of a story set among the gods and creatures of Norse mythology. Ronald D. Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer.
Born in Washington, D.C., Bautista has spoken publicly about his Filipino roots, saying his father is Filipino and his mother is Greek. He has described visiting the Philippines as a homecoming and has incorporated symbols of his Filipino heritage into his tattoos.
Prime Video has not announced a premiere date. Production is expected to resume in Vancouver following the recasting.
